The Raven's Song

5

lesson one: graphite study

In this graphite study we are going to take some time to really observe the intricacies of a raven’s form and structure. How do the feathers orientate around the body? How are the feathers different depending on their function? How does the light play on a black glossy bird? How can we honour this in a realistic representation?

Mediums Used:

  • Preferred paper for graphite sketching - I used Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed watercolour paper in the 200gsm weight. Other papers that are brilliant for graphite include other brands of hot pressed watercolour paper, Stillman and Birn papers, bristol paper
  • Graphite - use what you prefer, but it is best to have various hardnesses (from the harder led in the "H" range to the blacker (softer) “B” range. I like to use both traditional pencils and mechanical pencils
