So now, that you are more familiar with his Blue Period works, let’s go ahead and take a closer look at one of his most famous pieces - The Old Guitarist.

Fascinating right? I think analyzing artwork is so critical to learning and understanding the principles of design and aesthetics. I encourage you to look at more of his work and ask yourself some questions:

QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN ANALYZING ART:

  • Where do you look first?
  • What do the colors make you feel?
  • How has he divided up the canvas?
  • Where do you feel tension in the piece?
  • How many values can you see?
  • What area has the highest contrast?
  • Do you see repeating patterns, shapes or angles?

It is through this process of analysis that we can further train our eye and of course bring that knowledge back into your own work.

Alright, so now that your mind is aligned with our mentor, let’s move on to Paint!

Yes….I know...don’t be nervous. If you have never used oils, I’m going to show you that there is nothing to be afraid of. If you are using acrylics and have no interest in oils you can skip ahead to the Color Mixing Video.
