I know you guys are probably chomping at the bit to get to painting but let’s take a minute and warm up a bit. Let’s explore some of Picasso’s sketches and then do some of our own!
In this first video, I’ll be discussing some of the ways Picasso studied his subjects and created sketches and plans for his paintings.

Quite fascinating right? I love seeing his sketches and studies for his later paintings. It gives us a little peek into how he went from concept to creation.
Let’s try doing some sketches too. You can use a blue pencil or any blue medium you like. I have to share that I just found these wonderful blue leads for mechanical pencils! They are so fun!
I have gathered together some wonderful historical imagery that you can use as reference (or you may choose you own). I tried to stay with the similar themes that Picasso depicted during his Blue Period. Try and stay loose and enjoy the process. If you resonate with one of the references put it aside and consider it for your portrait or figurative project later on.
***Just a quick note before you begin, I am sketching very lightly at first in blue, so it is hard to see for a little bit...but it does get darker later on!
Now I will show you a couple of other quick sketches I did including one using mixed media.
Here are the references I used:

I hope you enjoy doing some of these studies in BLUE!
