beyond blue

I mentioned in the Slide show that Picasso also did figurative scene where he often explored other color relationships, veering into warmer colors along with the blue tones. Let’s take a look at a few!

Beyond blue - Part 1

How wonderful are some of these scenes? I think it is truly beautiful the way he mingles the complementary tones of orange and red into the blue. These scenes truly inspired me!

Add into the mix of creative juices the gorgeous historical photography of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (you will see many of his images in our reference library) and I knew what I wanted to paint.

Here is the reference image I used:

I did a sketch of this piece and a little study so I could get a feel for this subject. You can see I’ve added in boats into my composition.

I encourage you to go through the same process that we have been working with and go ahead and do some sketches, some thumbnails and even play with color. I did a very quick color study on my iPad. This way you will feel more confident when you go to the canvas to create your final piece.

Let’s get started:

I loved creating this scene and bringing other colors into play! I hope you enjoy too!

Okay so, set your pieces in a safe place to dry for a good week (if using oils) then I’ll show you how to varnish.
