building your site : part two

5. about page

As I mentioned in the previous Week 1 class,

There are 5 basic categories to writing a good About Page.

1. Who are you?

2. What do you do?

3. When did you start doing what you’re doing?

4. Where are you and where have you been?

5. How have you accomplished what you’re presenting to the visitor?

If you’ve already filled out your worksheet, this web page should come together pretty quickly. If you’d like to use the demo images for the class, be sure to use the images from your “Website Resource” folder.

Let’s begin.

about page

I hope that was the easiest page for you to build so far and you’re becoming more familiar with the Squarespace Content Blocks. Now that you’re becoming a skilled website designer/builder, let’s start by learning a few basic Blogging 101 and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tips.

6. blog page

Blog 101 and SEO

Blogging takes time and persistence to grow your audience and drive traffic to your website.

We want to begin with understanding the basics of creating a blog post and how to find and use appropriate keywords in your post. Using some of these techniques will help you rank higher on Google and other search engines.

The tips Chris is about to provide are here to help guide you. But don’t let the details of “Google Search Ranking”, “SEO” and “Keywords” keep you from writing… the goal is to just start! Like any muscle, it will grow stronger with time.

Blog - 101 and SEO

I know that was a lot to take in. Keep at it and continue writing. As you grow your following on your site and social media, along with ranking higher in search results, it can become pretty exciting!

Building Your Blog

Now that we’ve covered some of the details when blogging, it’s time to build out our Blog Page and a series of blog posts as examples.

Because you want to focus on building your subscriber list, you’ll be building a custom Blog Page to hold all your recent blog posts along with a subscriber section below.

Blog RSS feed with MailChimp

If you’d like your subscribers to receive your blog posts directly in their inbox, I recommend setting up an RSS feed between MailChimp and Squarespace. This is a handy automation feature that keeps you from creating a new email every time you create a new blog post.

Just click “Publish” and you’re done!

7. contact page

You've made it! You’re ready to build the final page to your website! Since you’re an expert at Squarespace, this page should come together pretty quickly.

This page is very straight forward and you want to make sure your contact page is clear and easy for your visitor to contact you via email, phone or address (if you wish them to call or drive over).

Creating a form field for the visitor to fill out a detailed form will allow you to not only provide a more professional experience but also drive the visitor to be direct and thorough with their request.

Let’s start creating the final main section of your site:
