Drawing from life is incredibly useful and a wonderful way to build your observation and hand eye coordination. Is drawing a coffee cup as interesting as a human face...well no...not to me at least BUT it is a GOOD practice. The more we can translate a 3D object onto a 2D surface the more convincing, beautiful and realistic our drawings will be. What if you want to draw abstract figures or shapes? Well...guess what, this will help you too! Being able to truly SEE is at the core of art. Sketching daily, even if it’s a simple item on our desk will dramatically improve your drawing skills. Even if you don’t enjoy still life drawing...well...it’s kinda like sit ups....no one likes doing them but they will make you stronger! ;)
That said...let’s get on with it
Here is the simple still life I set up for myself. I recommend setting up no more than 3- 4 items. It can also just be a single object. If you set up more than one item, try using things that have different textures, forms and heights. This will add interest to your study.
I hope you were able to relax into this study. Try and do this kind of drawing frequently to increase your observation skills.
Ready for more sketching?
Me too.
Bonus lessons to come! Yah!!!
