prima ballerina

Now it’s time to begin our Prima Ballerina project! I’ve been looking forward to this one! So look through our Pinterest boards and select a singular ballerina reference that resonates with you. I chose this one.

Now, taking what we have learned from our figure drawing and our master pastel study let’s create a beautiful Degas inspired Prima Ballerina. We will start with a black and white drawing and then move into soft hints of color.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • Pastel paper
  • Photo reference
  • Charcoal pencil
  • Soft chalk pastels
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Pastels
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Spray Fixative
  • Tortion or blending stump (optional)
  • White charcoal pencil or white pastel

I found this project quite meditative once I surrender to the process. It is common to have some apprehension and fear in the beginning of a drawing, so take your time and breath through it. I can’t wait to see your Prima Ballerinas!

Let's continue to opening night...
