Mixed Metaphor

2

Lesson

As I worked on this piece, a sense of harmony emerged between the individual elements even as they were created in very different mediums. It felt like a great metaphor for this month’s theme of finding balance and harmony in our creative practice and our artwork.

Art is a line around your thoughts.

Before embarking on this project, I admit I was not familiar with the work of Maxfield Parrish, but I love how a fresh discovery can inspire a fresh approach. I hope you will also feel inspired and enjoy the experience of working this way.

supply list

The supplies needed to create this piece are fairly simple and you will probably have many of them already. It’s also the kind of lesson where supplies can easily be substituted for those you have on hand. Let’s gather our supplies and begin!

  • Matte Medium + small brush for adhering collage paper
  • Gouache – in a color that coordinates with your collage paper + black.  I used Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache in Sap Green, Ivory Black and White.  This may be substituted for other wet media of your choice e.g. Fluid or Hi-flow acrylics, watercolor.  Results may vary but explore and experiment!
  • Vine or Willow Charcoal + tissue for blending
  • Charcoal Pencil, I used a General’s 2B (med)
