I realized that having the right mindset is extremely important for anyone to keeping a regular sketching habit. Take a good break and check-in with yourself what is really happening that you are not sketching. A few example of questions:
What keeps me really from sketching?
- Not wanting to spoil the sketchbooks? …and if I spoil one what will happen?
- Being critical about my sketches? Am I reasonable or do I want results without work?
- Who do I try to impress and is it really necessary? What would happen if no one is impressed?
- Can I start making sketches immediately or do I need to start with a ‘crazy messy’ sketchbook just to get out of this?
- Do I want to take my time and finish sketches or do I want it to be a ‘in the moment’ thing. (Give it a try how it feels)
- What affirmations calm my ‘critical voice down’? Ex. I am practicing, so give me a break. I am improving sketch by sketch. I do not need to prove anything to anyone. Life is not a competition but a journey
- How do I feel when I am sketching?
- Who could join you for a sketch outdoors?
