As much as I love art supplies, I always find that less is more when it comes to nature journaling - especially if you’re taking your journal outside with you. At the very basic end of the scale, you can even get started with a pencil and a piece of paper. I love to capture the bold, vibrant colors I find in nature though, so I usually work with gouache in my journals and sketchbooks.
Gouache is an opaque watercolor paint - it’s such a versatile painting medium, and I’ve made myself a little travel palette that I can take anywhere. You can use any medium for this class though - watercolors or acrylic paint will be fine, but just keep in mind that I’ll be showing you how I work with gouache in these lessons and it does have a very unique set of characteristics and qualities!
If you haven’t used gouache before, and you want to give it a go than I do have a free mini-course on my website called Get Started With Gouache. I’d recommend getting a basic understanding of gouache and it’s quirky characteristics before you start your nature journal!
My favorite supplies are listed in the resources section of the class.
