project two - happy island

introduction

In this project we are going to work completely different. We will no use any reference pictures but let our imagination go wild. I invite you to paint an island… what island that will be is up to you.

Some ideas: a tropical island, an island full of animals, a flower island or maybe it is market day and the streets are filled with vegetable and people!

Start by gluing some of you lovely collage paper where you plan to paint the ocean. Than paint a base for the island (any shape) and water around. Suggestion a warm color for the island a cool for the ocean. Apply it with a spatula or paint brush if you like. Some effects can be added by sprinkling water over it.

Once you are happy with the base, sketch your houses, trees and whatever you choose with charcoal. Brush off the excess of charcoal and outline your sketch with paint.

I layer the houses by painting with the paintbrush and the palette knife. It is a constant going back and forth of painting looking for the perfect spot to add a collage. In this painting I chose to add cars in collage paper and the trees. Cut or rip the collage paper, whatever suits your signature in painting. Create instinctively and trust your ideas.

It is so relaxing to just imagine a world, glue, draw and paint.

I added some silver to give the island a bit of shine and felt it suited the color.
